The purpose of the K23 award is to provide individuals who have a clinical doctoral degree with an intensive, supervised, patient-oriented research experience. How long does it take to get to K23?
Candidate must commit a minimum of 9 calendar months (75%) of full-time professional effort to the K23 Career Development Award.

The grant support ultimately leads to research independence in translational, behavioral and biomedical fields. K23 grant is provided, for the duration of 3-5 years, in the form of: Salary Fund: ≤ $100,000. Research Fund: ≤ $50,000.
Can AK awards transfer?
When an investigator moves from one institution to another, and wishes to transfer a funded career development award to the new location, the NIH requires that a transfer application be submitted by the new institution.

A K24 is a midcareer award that protects 25-50% of your time for mentoring and learning a new skill or expanding on an existing skill. Eligible applicants are at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, R01 (or equivalent)-funded, and doing patient-oriented research.

Note: NIMH will continue to allow an awardee to transfer from one institution to another for the last year of the award, with prior approval of the responsible Program Official (Project Officer). However, no transfer will be allowed during a period of administrative extension or after the project has terminated.
