Can I download driving test routes?
Google Maps (MyMaps) provides a way to view driving test routes on your iPhone or Android device. Using the free Google Maps (MyMaps) you can download our routes into your account and access them on any iOS or Android device.
Are driving test routes always the same?
Road and traffic conditions are always changing, which is why some examiners often have to switch things up a bit in order to make sure the driving test doesn’t overrun. So, whilst test routes might seem inflexible on paper, when it comes to real-life driving, they’re a bit more malleable.
Can I sit my driving test anywhere in the UK?
It’s a point sometimes missed that you can take your driving test anywhere in the UK — you’re not tied to your local test centre. You can also take the theory exam in one place and the practical test (the bit I keep failing) in another. My first attempt at taking the test in a rural area was unsuccessful.
Can I use a sat nav on my driving test?
During your driving test, the examiner will ask you to stop at the side of the road in a safe and convenient place. If your test involves a sat nav then it will be on throughout the test, although it won’t show directions until the independent driving part begins.
What sat nav do examiners use?
The examiner will provide the sat nav (a TomTom Start 52) and set it up. You won’t need to set the route – the examiner will do this for you.
How many possible test routes are there?
Depending on the size of your test centre there could be anywhere from 5-20 different routes available for examiners to use. Car, motorcycle and ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) routes are available.

Can you choose your driving test Centre?
It is possible to take your driving test in a different city. However, we recommend that you only do so if you have had driving lessons in the town or city where you intend to take your driving test.

Four in every five tests will involve the use of a sat nav; in the remaining fifth of tests, drivers will have to follow traffic signs instead.
Can you use your phone as a satnav in a driving test?
Yes, it’s legal to use your phone as a sat nav, as long as it has secure, hands-free access and it does not block your view of the road or traffic ahead. You can be prosecuted if the phone is touched whilst driving. If you need to amend a route or touch your phone for any reason, you must pull over and park to do so.
