Are SIDS rare?
This statistic may sound alarming, but SIDS is rare and the risk of your baby dying from it is low. Most deaths happen during the first 6 months of a baby’s life. Infants born prematurely or with a low birthweight are at greater risk. SIDS also tends to be slightly more common in baby boys.
How common is SIDS in Canada?
In Canada, 90% SIDS cases occur when the infant is under 6 months old. Approximately 1 out of 2,000 infants die of SIDS/year, every year. SIDS can happen at any time of day but is most likely to occur at night. As implied by the word “sudden”, SIDS can happen without warning, but the babies do not seem to suffer.
