Can Severn Trent make you have a water meter?
Legally, the water meter is an asset that belongs to Severn Trent. Tampering with the meter is a contravention of Section 175 of the Water Industry Act 1991. It can be a criminal offence to interfere with, wilfully damage or remove the meter.
Can water meter be removed?
When you move into a home which already has a water meter fitted, you cannot make a request for it to be removed. In short, the law (The Water Industry Act) does not permit the removal of a meter in these circumstances. You can find further information about water meters here.
Can I refuse a water meter UK?
The rule simply gives water companies the power to choose to use metering as a way of managing water resources in their area. However, if you refuse, it could put you on its “no access” higher charge which could be as high as £602 a year – so make sure you give it enough thought before rejecting it.
What’s the water meter look like?
Most residential water meters are located near the curb or sidewalk at the front of the property in a concrete “box.” The water meter box will have a metal or plastic lid and may be marked, “Water Meter.” Use a long screwdriver to remove the lid. Some water meters will have a small, hinged cover while others may not.

What happens if you don’t want a water meter?
If you do not have a meter, you will be charged a fixed amount each year (‘unmetered’ charges). These charges usually relate to the rateable value of your property. You should check your bill to see how you pay for your water. Some people regard meters as the fairest way to charge for water and sewerage services.
What happens if my Severn Trent meter is over recorded?
The meter will be sent away for testing on calibrated equipment independently of Severn Trent Water. If it is confirmed to be inaccurate we won’t charge you for the test. If it has over-recorded we will refund you the amount we estimate has been overcharged on your latest bill.
