What immunization is LAIV?
Live, attenuated influenza vaccine (called “LAIV”) is a nasal spray vaccine that may be given to non-pregnant people 2 through 49 years of age. It takes about 2 weeks for protection to develop after vaccination.
How does the LAIV vaccine work?
When the viruses are sprayed into the nose, they stimulate the body’s immune system to develop protective antibodies that will prevent infection by naturally occurring influenza viruses. The live viruses in the nasal-spray flu vaccine (LAIV) are attenuated, cold-adapted, and temperature sensitive.
What age can LAIV vaccine be given?
LAIV is indicated for the active immunisation of children and adolescents from 2 years to under 18 years of age for the prevention of influenza infection, in line with the recommendations given in Chapter 19 of Immunisation Against Infectious Disease: ‘The Green Book’ and annual flu letter(s).
What is the Fluenz vaccine?
Fluenz Tetra is a vaccine to prevent influenza (flu). It is used in children and adolescents 24 months to less than 18 years of age. Fluenz Tetra will help to protect against the four virus strains contained in the vaccine, and other strains closely related to them.
Who can get LAIV?
Some people should not get the nasal spray flu vaccine: Children younger than 2 years old. Adults 50 years and older. People with a history of severe allergic reaction to any ingredient of the vaccine or to a previous dose of any flu vaccine.
Can you get flu from LAIV?
LAIV contains weakened influenza viruses and may cause mild influenza symptoms but these are much milder than those due to influenza infection.
Why can’t adults have nasal flu vaccine?

In order to administer the vaccine to the second nostril, pinch the dose-divider clip to remove it from the applicator. Place the tip just inside the second nostril and with a single motion depress the plunger as quickly as possible to deliver the remaining 0.1ml dose of the vaccine.
Is the Covid vaccine live?
