Where are the Needles on Isle of Wight?
The Needles is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30m out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost civil parish of the Isle of Wight.
Why are Isle of Wight Needles called needles?
The name the Needles comes from the fourth rock, which was needle-shaped and known as ‘Lot’s Wife’. The book of Genesis in the Bible records that Lot’s Wife was turned into a pillar of salt as a punishment for looking back after being told not to when she was fleeing from the destruction of Sodom.

Do I have to book for the Needles?
The Needles Landmark Attraction sits at the top of the cliffs here and is well worth exploring, especially if you have children. It is here that you buy the book of tickets you need to take the chair lift to the beach (and back) that will also let you take the fairground rides.
Is Needles Isle of Wight Open?
The Needles is open all year round from 10am until 4pm, with later opening hours during the summer months and on special event dates, such as Magic in the Skies during July and August.
Can you walk down to Alum Bay?

Where does Coloured sand come from on Isle of Wight?
Alum Bay Chine
The sands are coloured due to oxidised iron compounds formed under different conditions. Alum Bay Chine begins as a small wooded valley descending eastward from the junction of the B3322 and the road to Headon Hall.

Why is Alum Bay so called?
This clearly needs more investigation It should be noted, however, that Alum Bay has received its name because it was a place where pyrite was collected on the beach for the manufacture of alum. Not much pyrite is visible now (there is some) but perhaps pyrite is preserved, as at Studland, at and below low tide level.
