Will BMW 5 Series wheels fit 3 Series?
Yes, they will fit, no they will not fit properly. 5-series wheels will bolt on a 3-series, but the offset is different so they will stick out too far.

The E90 used M12 lug bolts and the F30 uses M14 bolts, so I don’t believe any wheels from a E90 will work on a F30. they will. the seats of the bolts are the same. i used my E90 set for one winter season, just had to get new bolts.

IF the wheels are E90 ones and you wish to fit them on the E39, then you’ll need to either have the centre bore machined out to 74.1mm or, use hubcentric adaptors which are 74.1mm on the hub side and 72.56 on the wheel facing side.
