Can Schluter Kerdi be installed over drywall?
Yes. Once you install KERDI over the drywall panels, they will be completely protected from the water and vapor in your tiled shower.
Can you use modified thinset over Kerdi?
In general, modified thin-set mortar is not recommended to set ceramic and stone tile, including large format tiles, over the KERDI membrane. Modified thin-set mortars must dry for the polymers to coalesce and form a hard film in order to gain strength.
Can you put Kerdi over cement board?
Yes,Kerdi can be installed on drywall or cement board. However if installed on drywall it is only protecting one side. All shower/tub areas should have concrete board (I prefer hardiboard).

What’s the best way to install a Kerdi shower?
Compress KERDI membrane into the walls, going from the ceiling to the floor. Remove air gaps and flatten KERDI using either a KERDI trowel or 6 inch drywall knife. Overlap all KERDI membrane by 2 inches. Watch our video for all the KERDI installation tips
How big does a Kerdi shower pan need to be?
If you’re a complete newbie we promise you’ll be able to install the KERDI shower kit after today! Let’s dive in. In this bathroom we installed a 4′ x 5′ shower and used the KERDI shower kit; it included a 48″ x 72″ shower pan, which we cut to size. Our wall substrate was drywall and that will be waterproofed using Schluter’s KERDI membrane.
