What VLAN 4095?

What VLAN 4095?

Basically, VLAN ID 4095 specifies that the port group should use trunk mode or VGT mode, which allows the guest operating system to manage its own VLAN tags. Guest operating systems typically do not manage their VLAN membership on networks. VLAN 1001 through 1024 are Cisco reserved VLANs.

Does VLAN 0 exist?

The all-zero and all-one tag (i.e. VLAN 0 and VLAN 4095) are not used, per the 802.1q specification. Furthermore, VLAN 1 is reserved for “untagged traffic,” meaning that any data traffic in a network that does not have a VLAN tag is considered to be on VLAN 1.

Why are there only 4096 VLANs?

Only 12 bits are used for VLANs in 802.1q, so you can only use VLANs from 0-4095 (=4096* different VLANs).

What do VLAN tags do?

A VLAN tag is a unique identifier that indicates the VLAN to which a frame belongs. On receiving a tagged frame, the switch inspects the frame header and, based on the VLAN tag, identifies the VLAN. The switch then forwards the frame to the destination in the identified VLAN.
