What is a DCR for eye surgery?
A dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgery that creates a new path for tears to drain between your eyes and your nose. You may need this surgery if your tear duct has become blocked.
Is DCR surgery successful?
Some patients with chronic symptoms and a history of different forms of lacrimal duct surgery reported their symptoms to have lasted for several years. External DCR in the present study has a success rate of 82.8%. The success rate of external DCR in the literature has been reported to lie between 80% and 99% [13–17].

The tube is simply removed externally by grasping it at the medial canthus with non-toothed forceps and firmly pulling laterally in a single movement (Figure 1c). What can go wrong with them? After the tears leave the eye through the puncta, they drain down through a little “tube” called the nasolacrimal duct. You may drive after 24 hours and most people require a week off work. Do not travel on an airplane for 2 weeks after surgery. Do not be discouraged if your eye is still watery after surgery. It is usual to have a watery eye for some weeks or even months after surgery until the swelling and inflammation has settled.
How is Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery performed?
Dacryocystorhinostomy surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. It may be done under local anesthesia, with the patient sedated with intravenous medications, or under general anesthesia, in which case the patient will sleep through the operation.
How long is recovery from tear duct surgery?
