Is cultured stone easy to install?
Manufactured stones are fairly easy to install. However, there are some crucial things that need to be done in order to complete a proper installation.
Can I use thinset to install cultured stone?
Thinset is recommended for use in stone veneer or brick veneer installations on a concrete of masonry surface over expanded metal lath. Always check with a professional before starting your project to be sure you have the right mortar for the job.
What kind of mortar do you use for Cultured stone?
SAKRETE® Stone Veneer Mortar is a high-performance, polymer-modified mortar designed to set and grout artificial stone and natural stone veneers. It can be applied to many structurally sound and solid walls that can support the weight of the stone veneer, including masonry units, poured concrete or plywood*.
Is a scratch coat necessary for stone veneer?
Step 3: Scratch Coat A scratch coat will be needed when metal lath is used. This step is not necessary when applying stone veneer to a cleaned concrete, masonry, or stucco surface.
Is mortar the same as thinset?
The word “thinset” is sometimes used interchangeably with “mortar,” because it’s a type of modified mortar made specifically for tile. Thinset is made of sand, water, and cement, and can also contain additives for increased bonding, water resistance, and flexibility.
How thick should mortar be for veneer stone?
½ inch
Using a trowel, apply QUIKRETE® Veneer Stone Mortar at a minimum of ½ inch (13 mm) thick to surface making sure to embed the mortar into the wire lath (if used).

Do you have to lay lath over cultured stone?
You will want to make sure that you first lay a galvanized, metal lath over the surface on which you will be working before selecting the cultured stone that you will use. This will allow the mortar and the faux stone to set nicely when you are ready to make the final touches.

First lay out your stones close to the installation area. This will enable you to oversee the availability of the stones and give variety and contrast in the overall design. Butter the stone with a thin layer of mortar and press it on the back of the stone hard enough with your trowel.
