Justices of the Peace are still serving the NSW community, however services are changing to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of scheduled JP services are no longer operational. This may include services at your local council, court, library, chemist, post office or police station.
How do I become a justice of the peace NSW?
To be eligible for appointment as a NSW Justice of the Peace (JP), you must:
- be at least 18 years of age.
- be nominated by a NSW Member of Parliament (MP)
- be an Australian citizen or a person who is entitled to vote at a general election for the Legislative Assembly.
- be of good character.
- not be an undischarged bankrupt.
Who can witness a signature in NSW?
Usually a witness can be anyone who:
- is 18 years or older.
- knows the person whose signature they are witnessing or has taken reasonable steps to verify their identity.
- isn’t a party to the document.
- if the document is a trust deed, isn’t a beneficiary of the trust.
Who can certify identity documents in Australia?
A person currently licensed or registered to practice in Australia as one of the following occupations:
