Do GP receptionists need DBS checks?
Clinical staff (including GPs, nurses and healthcare assistants) Guidance states that all clinical staff require a DBS check. In some cases, practices may use these checks rather than obtaining an additional DBS check when the GP begins working for the practice.
How do I get my DBS countersigned by CQC?
A CQC-DBS disclosure is an enhanced DBS disclosure that’s been countersigned by CQC. You’ll need to apply for it on the CQC Disclosure Service site. The check results in a DBS certificate and disclosure number. The disclosure must be no more than 6 months old when you apply to register.
Do company directors need a DBS check?
No – the DBS check only tells us whether or not a person is prohibited from working with vulnerable adults/children and whether they have a criminal record. Who can countersign DBS?
A countersignatory is a person within a Registered Body who is registered with the DBS to countersign applications, making a declaration that the position is eligible for the DBS check requested. Guidance is available to help you complete the countersignatory application form.
Are DBS checks transferable between Organisations?
Yes, but also no. DBS checks are only transferable if you have signed up for the Update Service, which you must do within 14 days after receiving the initial DBS certificate. Once you register successfully to the Update Service, your DBS check is portable between jobs.
What crimes are relevant to safeguarding?
Behaviour which amounts to abuse and neglect also often constitute specific criminal offences under various legislation, for example:
- physical or sexual assault or rape;
- psychological abuse or hate crime;
- wilful neglect;
- unlawful imprisonment;
- theft and fraud;
- certain forms of discrimination.
Does a criminal record stay with you for life?
Although convictions and cautions stay on the Police National Computer until you reach 100 years old (they are not deleted before then), they don’t always have to be disclosed. Many people don’t know the details of their record and it’s important to get this right before disclosing to employers.

How to get DBS check for CQC registration?
Go to the CQC and Post Office shared website. Register for your CQC check (this takes about 10 minutes). You will usually receive an email with login details within 2 working days. Login and fill in the DBS form. Get your identity checked at a post office that accepts CQC-CE-DBS applications. This service is only available at some post offices.
Do you have to register with CQC if you are GP?
No. It’s the provider of care that registers with CQC, i.e. the practice, not individual GPs or the individual places where care takes place.. A GP partnership with three practices only needs to complete one application – they include details for each practice on that single application.
